Is Your Boat Ready for Storage?
You can’t just pull your boat into storage and hope for the best. Here’s a quick guide on how to inspect, prepare, and store your boat all-year round.
Cleaning and Inspection:
- Wash the entire boat thoroughly to remove salt, dirt, and debris
- Dry completely, paying special attention to bilges and hidden areas to prevent mold
- Apply a protective wax coating
- Inspect the hull for cracks or blisters
- Check the propeller for damage and remove tangled fishing line
- Test electronics functionality
- Remove valuables and gear if storing off-site
Interior Preparation:
- Fill fuel tank and add fuel stabilizer
- Drain all water from boat, engine, and lines
- Flush engine with marine antifreeze
- Check all fluids (drive oil, engine oil, gear oil) for water contamination
- Winterize holding tanks, generators, and air conditioning systems
- Keep air vents open for circulation
- Place moisture absorbers in enclosed spaces
- Vacuum carpets, clean surfaces and upholstery
- Cover furniture and electronics once dry
Exterior Preparation:
- Use a quality, weather-appropriate boat cover
- Ensure proper drainage around storage location
- Use tie-downs to anchor the boat
- Store on gravel or paving stones to prevent sinking
Ongoing Maintenance:
- Regularly inspect cover for tears
- Set pest traps
- Monitor for moisture or mold buildup
- Disconnect and store battery on a wooden surface with a trickle charger
- Check battery periodically for corrosion
